Venue accessibility

Accessibility is incredibly important to us. We welcome makers and customers with accessibility requirements and are committed to learning, adapting, and accommodating to meet the needs of the jewellery community.

Jewellery making and silversmithing is a physical craft and we would like to support you as much as possible in getting the outcome you are hoping for. The craft also includes noise and other sensory stimulus including acidic smells and burning. We work with chemicals, open flame and sharp tools.

We ask that if you require extra physical assistance with using tools please let us know in advance and we are happy to prepare and research alternatives if needed.

If you are a client with extra learning needs that might affect your experience please let us know in advance and we can make sure you’re comfortable and prepared for your course.

Floor space measurements available upon request.

Step-free entrance

Our door is at street level, followed by a gentle ramp into the main workshop space.

Navigable space

The workshop floor is smooth and we leave plenty of room to move around the space.

Wheelchair-friendly benches

Our workshop table heights have been chosen with wheelchair users in mind.

Roomy, private toilet facilities

Whilst we do not have an official accessible toilet, our facilities are very roomy.

Specialist tools

We have accessible clamp tool set-ups which can aid arthritis & weaker hand strength.

Calm, adaptable environment

We often play low ambient music in the studio, and are always happy to lower it on request. We provide ear plugs and recommend bringing headphones if loud hammering is disruptive for you.

Manual door entry

Wheelchair users may require a member of staff to open the front door, where possible, please drop us a quick note so we can be on-hand for your arrival.

Small bump near the toilets

It should be easy enough to roll over in a chair, as it is in a doorway, but we are happy to help you if needed.

Venue inclusivity

Silver & Steel in an inclusive space.

We recognise that people have different needs, experiences, learning styles, and ways of engaging creatively.  We aim to make our studio adaptable and supportive for everyone. We welcome people of all genders, identities, abilities, and backgrounds, and strive to remove barriers that may prevent someone from accessing creative studio space.

We want everyone to feel valued, included, and empowered to explore jewellery making as a form of self-expression and connection.

At Silver & Steel we have neurodiversity within our teaching team, resident group and jewellers that we stock. We have also taught people in workshops with a diverse range of learning needs including but not limited to dyslexia, autism, adhd and learning disabilities.

LGBTQIA+ friendly

We welcome all gender expressions in all areas of our business and will respect pronouns.

Guide Dog Friendly

We have taught jewellery making to participants who are legally blind.

Autism and ADHD training

Tutors and Staff have undergone training with Purple Ella, a consultant in Autism and ADHD inclusivity workplace training.

Flexible Participation

Workshop participants can take breaks, sit on our sofa, modify activities and go at their own pace. There is no pressure to create at the same pace as everyone else in a class.

Positive and welcoming language

Our workshops are aimed at experience rather than a pressure to produce , creating space to make rather than a pressured learning environment.

Gallery Diversity

We stock and promote designers with international heritage and run an annual open call inviting early stage jewellers or jewellers who have come to the craft from untraditional pathways to exhibit with us. We believe the more different approaches and backgrounds the better!
